Edoardo Bove, the Fiorentina midfielder, is set to have a removable heart starter device fitted after collapsing during a Serie A match against Inter Milan, with the operation part of the necessary medical protocol for his discharge from the hospital.
Bove's Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) is designed to prevent fatal cardiac arrests, but such devices are not allowed in Serie A, complicating his potential return to the league.
The case of Denmark's Christian Eriksen, who had an ICD fitted after collapsing on the pitch in 2021, illustrates the challenges players face post-cardiac events, as Eriksen had to leave Inter Milan to continue his career.
To return to play in Serie A, Bove must choose to have the ICD removed after extensive medical evaluations are completed.
