49ers' DeMeco Ryans hired by Texans: 11 candidates to replace him as defensive coordinator
The move the 49ers were expecting a year ago has finally occurred: DeMeco Ryans is leaving to be a head coach.

Ryans, who turned a strong 49ers defense in 2021 into the NFL's top unit in 2022, will take over the Texans, a team that selected him with the first pick in the draft in 2006.His wife also is from the Houston area.

Ryans' hiring also means Kyle Shanahan must pick a replacement from a group of candidates familiar with the system the 49ers have run since 2017 as well as the so-called Vic Fangio system that many of San Francisco's opponents - including the Eagles - ran in 2022.

Fangio, however, has said that nothing is finalized.Until it is, he remains the top candidate on this list.
