Wales hosts Bosnia-Herzegovina and Northern Ireland travel to Italy in World Cup play-off semis; winners progress to March finals for a World Cup spot.
A pair of extra-time goals from Kieran Tierney and Kenny McLean gave Scotland a 4-2 win over Denmark on the last day of UEFA qualifying and a spot in the World Cup for the first time since 1998. Scott McTominay opened the scoring Tuesday at Hampden Park with a superb bicycle kick goal three minutes into the match, but Rasmus Hojlund levelled the score to dampen the hopes of Scotland, who needed a win to secure top spot in Group C and an automatic bid.
The 2018 World Cup runner-up quickly recovered, however, as Josko Gvardiol leveled in the 23rd. Making his return to the national team after two years away, Petar Musa put Croatia ahead 2-1 after halftime from Josip Stanisic's assist. In complete control, Croatia added a third goal when Nikola Vlasic volleyed in a precise cross from Ivan Perisic at the far post.
Italy entered September's international window with ground to make up in Group I, trailing Norway by nine points but holding two games in hand. They responded well, brushing aside Estonia in Bergamo before heading to Hungary, where they fought through a chaotic encounter against Israel. Gattuso's side looked to have thrown away a vital win after surrendering a 4-2 lead, but Sandro Tonali's stoppage-time strike sealed a dramatic victory and kept their qualification hopes alive.
