Images released by the NYPD earlier Tuesday showed the alleged suspect boarding a Bronx-bound 2 train shortly after the assault. The NYPD says the man wanted in connection with a deadly assault inside the Jay Street subway station in downtown Brooklyn is now in custody. He was taken to New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not yet been released as police work to notify his family.

"While local leaders seem intent on putting the needs of criminals first, we're not waiting for the next Iryna," Duffy said in a statement. "Chicago and Boston are on notice to take actions that enhance safety and reduce the crime affecting their riders and transit workers - or risk federal support. This is about standing up for American families who deserve a safe and clean transportation system."

The 65-year-old victim got off an elevator at the station at 4:45 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 18, when a stranger approached him, swinging her backpack and striking him in the neck, police said. The senior sustained a minor laceration to his neck but refused medical attention at the scene. The attacker ran out of the station and fled on foot in an unknown direction.

Police from the 108th Precinct in Long Island City and Transit District 20 are looking for a suspect who allegedly stole a wallet from an R train rider in Woodside late last month. The incident occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 30, inside the Broadway/Northern Boulevard subway station just before 3 p.m., when the 22-year-old victim dropped his wallet while passing through the turnstiles. A much older stranger stooped down, grabbed the wallet and fled on foot in an unknown direction, police said.

"I mean, I'm near Astoria. Bet," she told an investigator, according to a complaint filed in Queens Criminal Court. "I went to Broadway, and behold - there was a lay-up train there. Still on FaceTime with my homeboy, so I drove it while I was on FaceTime with him."
