Safest summer in subway history, but NYPD says 'betrayal' looms
"Overall crime in our subways is nearly 12% below pre-pandemic levels,"
"These results don't just make the transit system safer. They make people feel safer, too."
"Tisch called planned federal cuts to the city's counterterrorism programs "devastating" and a "betrayal," warning they would undermine future safety efforts."
"It will absolutely be a less safe place six months from now. Let me be clear. These funds are the backbone of New York's counterterrorism programs,"
The months of July, August and September set records for low transit crime outside pandemic years, with only two transit shootings so far compared with six last year. Subway crime is nearly 12% below pre-pandemic levels, while overall major crime citywide remains elevated, with about 90,000 major crimes so far this year versus 70,000 at the same point in 2019. Redeployment of officers and adding 2,300 officers to 72 high-crime "summer violence zones" produced a 47% drop in shootings over 19 weeks. Citywide crime fell 4%, though Staten Island and Brooklyn saw increases. Officials warned that planned federal cuts to counterterrorism funding would undermine future safety and reduce NYPD counterterrorism resources.
