Scientists have found a way to detect an early warning signal for the collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), which plays a vital role in regulating the climate of large parts of the Northern Hemisphere.
There is uncertainty over when and how fast the AMOC will slow or halt due to climate change, but the consequences could be catastrophic, with some parts of Europe potentially seeing temperatures plunge by up to 30 degrees Celsius over a century.
