"Right now, OUSD educators are the lowest paid in the region, and as a result, the District loses nearly 400 hardworking, dedicated educators per year, costing the district $7.5 million annually," said Kampala Taiz-Rancifer, president of the Oakland Education Association. "This is a waste of resources, destabilizes classrooms, and especially hurts our most vulnerable students. Oakland educators have been in this fight for the schools our students deserve for a long time-and we remain committed to stabilizing our schools."

The San Francisco teachers' union and the SF Unified School District reached a tentative deal that was announced at 6 am Friday, after four days on strike, with the union getting a key benefit they had been seeking. The historic teachers' strike is over after a bargaining session that went through the night Thursday into Friday. As Mission Local reports, the union succeeded in getting fully funded healthcare for teachers with families, at the expense of their demand for salary raises.

Connor Haught has been juggling virtual work meetings and arts and crafts projects for his two daughters as his family tries to navigate a teachers strike in San Francisco with no end date in sight. Haught's job in the construction industry allows him to work from home but, like many parents in the city, he and his wife were scrambling to plan activities for their children amid the uncertainty of a strike that has left nearly 50,000 students out of the classroom.
