Teachers from Charter Schools Education Trust in south London have announced strikes over maternity pay, beginning on July 15. The National Education Union calls the current policy a two-tier system and demands equal maternity pay across all academies. Although the Trust agreed to three out of four union demands, it did not acquiesce to increasing maternity pay. Current pay disbursements show a significant difference between the Trust's offerings and the union's request for higher maternity compensation, which would standardize rates at 58 percent across all nine schools.
"Hundreds of London's teachers at Charter Schools Education Trust are striking over maternity pay with little notice, demanding equality across the nine academies in the group."
"The current maternity pay for the highest-paid teachers is 23,023, which stands significantly above the national minimum of 17,588, but below what the union demands."
