I'm not surprised this is happening, because at some point, Amazon will say we cannot absorb all this cost."
Prove is the right word. It's a 'Prove it' story. I have the benefit of a 23-year running start that has taught me so much about how retail works. I've gotten to see Target at its very best. I've gotten to see us when we are not at our very best, and that leads (to) a real clear view for me of when we're hitting on all cylinders.
Fiddelke, who officially took the reins of the struggling retailer on Sunday, laid out in a note on LinkedIn and on Target's website on Monday what his priorities are as he takes over. They include restoring Target's leadership in cheap-chic merchandise, making its stores and website easier and more pleasant to use, more fully leveraging tech to improve customer experience and operations, and "strengthening" employees and "growing alongside the communities" where Target runs its stores.
Out of all the earnings periods Target reports over the year, Q4 is the most important because covers the holiday shopping season when consumers are traditionally most willing to spend on non-discretionary items-a category that is Target's bread and butter.
In the memo, the executives announced that the chain would be initiating more layoffs-this time cutting around 500 positions. However, the majority of the job cuts will not impact store-level retail workers. Instead, the memo says that about 400 jobs will be lost across its distribution and another 100 jobs will go across its store district level.
The outlook for 2026 I'm watching 2026 with equal parts optimism and urgency. Optimism because consumer demand is still there. Retail sales have remained resilient in recent data. Urgency because the operating environment is only getting tighter. Coming out of FY2025, large retailers demonstrated resilience amid inflation pressure, shifting consumer behavior, and global supply-chain complexity. Walmart raised its outlook and leaned further into a model that blends physical stores, e-commerce scale, and execution discipline.
