The speed camera on Interstate 66 right underneath Virginia Avenue is a powerhouse. Last December, it nabbed an average of 80 drivers a day, despite signs that read 'Speed Limit: 40 MPH. Photo Enforced.' That one traffic cam took in nearly $9.2 million last year, making it the most lucrative in the District.
Californians, on average, paid about $29 billion more a year in federal taxes than the state received in return over the past decade. That's the largest imbalance in the nation. By contrast, there are about 30 states that receive more money from the federal government each year than their residents pay the IRS.
It's true that I was fully prepared to run in [McClintock's district], having tested the waters and with polls showing a favorable outlook in a 'safe' district. But doing what's easy and what's right are often not the same. And at the end of the day, as much as I love the communities in [that] District that I represent now - and as excited as I was about the new ones - seeking office in a district that doesn't include my hometown didn't feel right.
A group of Illinois small farmers are meeting with members of Congress on Thursday in Washington to discuss their hopes for "transformational investments" in the next farm bill, which governs policy in the agricultural sector. As they see it, the new law could provide significant financial investment and protections that reduce economic inequality and racial injustice; build crop and human resilience to climate change and unpredictable weather; and improve access to nutritious food and sustainable, local systems.
As the Nashville Banner reports, state Rep. Gino Bulso (R) filed three anti-LGBTQ+ bills this week, two of which challenge the Supreme Court's decisions establishing the rights of same-sex couples to legally marry and that Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act protects U.S. employees from discrimination based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. Bulso went so far as to title his House Bill 1472 the "Banning Bostock Act." The bill, according to the Banner, would explicitly exclude sexual orientation and gender identity from Tennessee's definition of sex-based discrimination, in defiance of the Supreme Court's 2020 decision.
John Diehl, the former Republican house speaker, received about $380,000 in federal loans for his law firm between 2020 and 2022 through a program intended to help cover operating expenses for businesses affected by the coronavirus pandemic. But Diehl admitted in a September plea agreement that he instead used the money for personal expenses such as country club dues, swimming pool maintenance, his home mortgage and vehicle payments for a Tesla, Audi and Jeep.
I am pleased to announce that the Highly Respected United States Senator from the Great State of Oklahoma, Markwayne Mullin, will become the United States Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS), effective March 31, 2026.
The constant kinds of yelling and screaming and, you know, holding up signs and doing all of these things – I don't care if it's a Republican or Democrat as the president, just don't do that. Respect the office.
What a sad commentary on the Democratic Party, that the idea the American government should stand for American citizens, not illegal aliens—that shouldn't be controversial, but apparently it was to the Democrats.
"It's very clear that Secretary Kristi Noem is undermining FEMA's capabilities and putting the public in harm's way," said Abby McIlraith, a FEMA disaster aid manager and whistleblower, in press call on February 4.
But on top of a lengthy list of demands from Democrats around ICE, expect an even longer one from the House Freedom Caucus, centering on sanctuary cities, immigration enforcement and border security. What's next: Conservatives would need to vote for a rule - a party-line procedural vote - to advance the bill. And President Trump's urging everyone to help it pass.
So, what does she mean when she says electing the right leaders? Tapper asked on Sunday's edition of CNN's State of the Union. That's not really immigration enforcement or DHS responsibility. I don't know, that'd be a question for the secretary, Homan answered. If I had to guess, probably, that, you know, only those legally eligible to vote would vote, but I have not talked to the secretary about those statements. That'd be something she'd have to answer.
Hawley's questioning of Ellison in the Senate Homeland Security Committee got off to a rough start with Ellison refusing to give a yes or no answer to the senator about whether he is Minnesota's attorney general. Things only spun out of control further as Hawley accused Ellison of having direct involvement in a group in the state committing $250 million in fraud. Ellison denied involvement and specifically reports that he took $10,000 in campaign donations from individuals tied to the Feeding Our Futures group.
Despite originally supporting ICE's effort in the city, known as Operation Metro Surge, Madel called it 'an unmitigated disaster' in his video, arguing it had 'expanded far beyond its stated focus on true public safety threats.' 'United States citizens, particularly those of color, live in fear,' he added. 'United States citizens are carrying papers to prove their citizenship. That's wrong.'
But the summer after his brother Dale had graduated from high school, he invited young Harry to join him in Ash Fork, a tiny dot in Arizona along Highway 40. Dale had found work at a gas station in the railroad town near an Indian reservation. Not much was memorable about the town, the railroad, or the people Harry met, but he never forgot one lesson he learned there.
Senator McConnell was discharged from the hospital [Tuesday] and is grateful for the outstanding care he received. He is feeling better and will be working from home this week on the advice of his doctors, spokesman David Popp said in a statement.
