hitting a big red reset button, which turns out to be just what the franchise needed. Executive-produced by Seth Rogen, this Muppet Show plays like an episode of the classic variety series, which premiered 50 years ago, right down to the theme song, the practical effects, and Statler and Waldorf heckling about its very faithful rebootiness: "If it ain't broke -" "They are broke! That's why they're doing it!" Har har har!
There have been few attempts at a Muppets reboot over the last 40 years, but none of the shows - like Muppets Tonight from the '90s or The Muppets from the 2010s - really recaptured the zany, put-on-a-show mayhem of the original The Muppet Show, which aired from 1974 - 1981. But Seth Rogen and director Alex Timbers had the good idea, for The Muppet Show's 50th anniversary, to just bring back the Vaudeville-inspired original instead of reinventing Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo and the rest of the gang for our social media age.
When someone mentions 1970s science fiction about a band of rebels fighting an evil, totalitarian space regime, your mind almost certainly goes to the original 1977 Star Wars.Failing that, you might think about the 1978 Battlestar Galactica, or even the TV and film versions of Logan's Run. But the oddest and most under-the-radar 1970s sci-fi rebellion show was Created by Terry Nation (the man who gave us the Daleks), Blake's 7 was ahead of its time when it debuted in 1978.
When The Mummy Returns made it to DVD, I unashamedly played it over and over on the big screen of our living room until I learned all the fight scene choreo between Rachel Weisz and Patricia Velásquez (Anck-su-namun). So to hear the new rumblings that The Mummy 4 is in the works and both Weisz and Brendan Fraser are in talks to return to the film, well, that's the light in the darkness I needed right now.
Producer Neal H. Moritz stated, "It just got to be too much" concerning Ryan Phillippe's absence from the reboot, mentioning they considered it would be "pushing it" to bring back all original cast members. He assured that their decision had nothing to do with a lack of love for Phillippe, and hinted at potential space for him in future sequels.
