The segment, which has been reviewed by The Verge, is a little shy of 14 minutes long. It features video of men, chained and bent double, being "paraded in front of cameras, pushed onto buses, and delivered to CECOT," according to the segment's narration. One former detainee, who CBS met in Colombia, said he was told he was "the living dead" at CECOT.
The now infamous terrorism confinement centre, known as Cecot, is Latin America's largest prison with capacity for 40,000 inmates. In March, the Trump administration struck a deal with El Salvador to send there more than 250 Venezuelan migrants that it accused of accused of terrorism and gang membership. Horror stories have since emerged about abuse that they are alleged to have endured, with lawyers for some of the men who were later released describing the conditions as state-sanctioned torture.
The Bureau of Prisons shut down FCI Dublin, a former minimum-security women's facility, in 2024 after news broke of the repeated sexual abuse of inmates, deteriorating and uninhabitable infrastructure, and cover-up and retaliation from the former prison's guards and staff. Felony charges were levied against the facility's warden, chaplain and several guards, who were suspected of running a rape club, resulting in nine convictions.
Video of the alleged rape of Palestinian prisoner at Sde Temain went viral last year. Now the prosecutor who leaked it has quit. The Israeli military's top lawyer, Major-General Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, has resigned after admitting to leaking footage showing the gang rape of a prisoner at the Sde Temain prison facility in August last year. The video of the rape had originally been leaked to the press in early August in the midst of a right-wing backlash following the arrest of a number of soldiers for the rape of a Palestinian prisoner.
Superior Court Justice Clayton Conlan says in his ruling that Joseph Richard Whitlock, Kulvir Singh Bhatia and Karn Veer Sandhu were subjected to "torturous state actions" at the Maplehurst Correctional Complex in December 2023. The ruling says a crisis intervention team at the facility responded to an inmate's assault on a correctional officer by conducting strip searches of all inmates in Unit 8, including the three accused men, and placing zip ties on their wrists.
