Widespread video and proliferating AI imagery around Alex Pretti's killing created confusion and rapid competing narratives, raising challenges for verifying heavily documented events.
Photo by Dean Moses Seventeen days after immigration enforcement agents murdered Renne Good, a young mother of three, without legal justification, they murdered Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse at a Veterans Hospital, on a Minneapolis street, also without legal justification. According to witnesses and videos, protesters gathered early Saturday morning, January 25, on Nicollet Street, to protest actions of anti-immigration agents. Some protesters blew whistles to warn residents of the agents' presence; others recorded the scene.
Judge Clifford Blakely's ruling came after Alameda County District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson's office asked to bring an end to the case, citing concerns about proving the allegations at trial, which was been scheduled to begin in late January. The dismissal closes the first Alameda County case of a police officer charged in an on-duty killing since BART Officer Johannes Mehserle was tried - and convicted - in the fatal shooting of Oscar Grant more than 15 years ago.
Eyewitness video from the incident was posted at the time to Twitter but has since been removed and the incident was witnessed by at least 20 people. Taylor reportedly would not respond to police commands to drop the bat, and use of Tasers did not seem to subdue him. Then former San Leandro Police Officer Jason Fletcher shot Taylor, and Taylor was seen in the video walking away from officers and dropping the bat before collapsing.
At least three people have been killed and five were injured in a fire blamed on protesters at a regional parliament building in eastern Indonesia, as widespread demonstrations rock the Southeast Asian nation. Indonesia's disaster management agency, in a statement on Saturday, confirmed the deaths following the Friday evening fire in Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi province, some 1,600km (994 miles) east of the capital, Jakarta.
