The water bubbles up hot from the earth and sunlight filters down through the branches of mighty oaks. But before you can soak in Santa Barbara County's highly popular Montecito Hot Springs, you'll need to hike a little over a mile uphill, threading your way among boulders, oaks and a meandering creek. And before the hike, there are two other crucial steps: getting to the trailhead and knowing what to expect.

In a news release Wednesday, officials said the move is an effort to prioritize public safety as forecasted snow accumulation creates challenges for event setup. "We regret that circumstances beyond our control are preventing us from hosting the event as planned, however we will always prioritize the safety of the public, staff, performers, and vendors," director of recreation and culture services Kevin Datema said in Tuesday's release.

The Berkeley Half Marathon is back again this weekend, and the city will be shutting down parking and travel lanes starting Saturday to accommodate the race course, which typically draws several thousand runners each year. Roads will stay open to vehicular traffic until at least 5 a.m. Sunday morning but the city will shut down four blocks around the finish line at Civic Center Park beginning Saturday morning.

No roadside parking is permitted in the Emerald Bay area of the Tahoe loop highway from July 15 to Oct. 15, affecting a 5-mile stretch between D.L. Bliss State Park and Cascade Lake.

I feel the council's policy is a money-making scheme rather than a genuine bid to crack down on illegal parking. The logic behind it does not make sense.
