The bulk of the £200 (10%) saving from a year ago is not real. It's a transfer of bad climate policy costs from bills to taxes. Hiding the problem, not solving it. This means future taxpayers, your children, are now subsidising old wind farms and failed heat pump promotion campaigns, rather than stopping the waste.
One of the greenest local councils in the country says it is cutting back on its net-zero schemes this year due to funding pressure. Islington Council has won praise for its ambitious targets to reduce carbon emissions in the borough. Last year, the borough was ranked the best single-tier local authority in the UK for its actions on climate change, which include decarbonising its waste recycling centre, rolling out electric vehicles and carrying out a social housing retrofit programme.
The Green party is offering simple solutions to complex problems and making undeliverable promises to voters ahead of the next election that could leave them disappointed, the prime minister's chief secretary has said. Darren Jones, one of Keir Starmer's most powerful ministers, said the resurgent Greens were a bit like the populist left version of the populist right of Reform UK, and that both were in danger of letting down voters.
He said: The business community want strong, stable policy signals, and flip-flopping is not good for investment. We see it right now in the US with a huge brain drain and capital drain, as whole sectors are being de-invested or even attacked. Consistency in the direction of UK policy over the last 20 years when successive Labour and Conservative governments vowed to press ahead with tackling the climate crisis, until Rishi Sunak's premiership had benefitted the economy, he said.
