War is a divisive subject. There's nothing positive about the loss of millions of lives. However, despite the immense destruction caused throughout history, some of the world's most iconic foods have resulted from wartime. Take candy, for example. M&Ms were literally inspired by a need to create candy for soldiers that could withstand the terrible conditions of war. It's true what Plato said, that "Necessity is the mother of invention." And sadly, there are few conditions that drive food innovation better than wartime, when lives are at stake and everyday ingredients truly become luxuries.

Starting at 5 p.m. on Oct. 31, the M&M's Halloween Rescue Squad will mobilize and deliver free candy to households across the country to save them from a candy catastrophe. Here's how it works: You have to live in a Gopuff delivery area to participate. Head to MMS.com/rescue-squad and click "Learn more." Submit your request for a candy refill. M&M's has partnered with Gopuff to delivery candy in under an hour, while supplies last.

M&M's mascots are anthropomorphic candies and have become iconic due to their personality, even embracing their cannibalistic nature in commercials that discuss how good they are.

M&M's originated in the early 1930s after Forrest Mars Sr. observed soldiers in Spain eating chocolate balls coated to resist melting in heat.
