The Dodgers kick off a huge series with the New York Yankees tonight at Dodger Stadium.For game one, fans are getting a good one with ace Clayton Kershaw (6-4, 3.32 ERA) on the mound for LA against Luis Severino (0-0, 1.59).The boys in blue are coming off an 18-10 month of May that saw them score 173 runs and stay in first place in the NL West from wire to wire.

These two teams met just a week ago in Yankee Stadium for the first time this year, but now we're getting a double-serving of The Rivalry.The Yankees are rested after off-days bracketing their split with the Mets, and the Sox just took their first off-day of the month yesterday.Perhaps some fresh lineups will ignite the offenses that mostly were contained last weekend, though the Yankees are sending one of their better pitchers out to start things off.

Gleyber Torres lined the first pitch of the game into left-center for a single, and that was the closest thing the Yankees had to momentum all night.Luis Severino was dreadful in his third start of the season, and the only New York hitters to make an impact were Josh Donaldson and Giancarlo Stanton, fresh off the IL.

The Yankees didn't come through Tuesday's big win over the Mets without concern.Worry has to be mounting about Luis Severino, who got lit up again and put the Yankees in a big hole.But the offense showed signs of life, with Anthony Volpe and DJ LeMahieu at least hinting that they could be pulling out of slumps.

In Justin Verlander's first start of the season, he pitched like an ace.No, he wasn't particularly dominant.And no, the Mets did not win.But Verlander, 40, took the mound Thursday afternoon at Detroit's Comerica Park the scene of many of his career highlights from his days with the Tigers gave up back-to-back home runs in the first inning, and then he refused to give up.

The first New York-Boston matchup of the season has been fittingly tight.The series opener on Friday night was a 3-2 Red Sox victory, one in which Anthony Volpe came within a few feet of walking things off in favor of the home team.Yesterday was another close affair, with a semi-surprising Domingo Germán/Tanner Houck pitchers duel emerging in a Yankee win.

Scheduling made it so that the Yankees and Red Sox wouldn't meet until the second week of June, but they hit the ground running last night.The Red Sox won a 3-2 squeaker to open the weekend series, albeit with some ninth inning nail-biting on Kenley Jansen's part.The pitch clock brought a refreshing pace to a matchup that invariably turned into a slog in years past.

MLB Trade Rumors | Darragh McDonald: Yesterday afternoon, the Yankees placed starting catcher Jose Trevino on the injured list with a left hamstring strain.To replace him on the active roster, they promoted catcher Ben Rortvedt.Originally acquired from the Yankees as part of the deal that sent Gio Urshela and Gary Sánchez (who, coincidentally, was just added to the active roster by the New York Mets) to the Twins for Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Josh Donaldson, Rortvedt has yet to actually make an appearance for the Yankees: an oblique injury and knee surgery sidelined him at the start of the 2022 season, and an aneurysm in his shoulder required surgery in February.

Tonight the Blue Jays start a four-game series with the Yankees at Rogers.The Yankees are 23-19, which only has then fourth in the AL East, 2 games back of the Jays and 8 games back of the Rays.The Yankees are eighth in the AL in runs scored per game at 4.57 (Jays are sixth at 4.80).And they are seventh in the AL in runs allowed per game at 4.19 (Jays are eighth at 4.25).
