A 50-year-old runner completed a 1,400-mile, near-10-week circumnavigation of Ireland, averaging over 20 miles daily to intimately explore ancestral landscapes.
With the two clubs situated in opposite corners of the country, the game represents the longest away trip in the history of English professional football, with the travelling Truro fans facing a gruelling 902-mile round trip from their homes in southern Cornwall all the way up to Gateshead in the northeast, on the other side of the River Tyne from Newcastle.
When I wheeled my bike off the ferry at Roscoff, northwest France, in the summer of 2024, the furthest I had ever ridden was the 99-mile Devon Coast to Coast route over two days. And yet here I was, about to embark on an epic journey, unsupported, towing a trailer with two wooden surfboards, a tent and wetsuits strapped to it.
It is a joy to play football and a big joy to score a goal, which I dedicate to my son and my wife. I feel pride for my country and also for my teammates, who did a big job to win this game.
