The New York Islanders are doing much better than I expected them to do to this point in the season.Sitting at 11-6-0 and fourth in the league by points (sixth by points percentage), they have certainly increased their postseason chances.In the interest of staying balanced and level-headed, it is worth pointing out that in the tough Eastern Conference, they sit only three points clear of the cut line, and they have had some games where they look less than stellar or have had to come back.

The Islanders and Flames have a trivial history of openers, what with both franchises entering the league together in 1972 and beginning with a 3-2 Atlanta Flames victory at Nassau Coliseum.Last season the Flames were again the guest of honor as the Islanders opened their second "permanent" home (not sure how to categorize Brooklyn, in retrospect), but Calgary spoiled the party by taking advantage of a Covid-ravaged Isles lineup that was returning from a long road trip that opened a season soon to fall into disarray.

Hot off a huge comeback against Oilers, the Rangers headed next door to Calgary to take on the Flames.They almost pulled off another, but ultimately fell short in OT.Unfortunately for the Rangers, another subpar start left them trailing by multiple goals.In the first minute.After an offensive zone turnover by the Rangers, Mikael Backlund sprung Andrew Mangiapane.

Bruins Orlov now has five points in his first three games with the Bruins.Dmitry Orlov seems to be settling right in with his new team in Boston.Linus Ullmark (54 saves) deserves most of the credit for the Bruins' dramatic 4-3 overtime victory over the Flames on Tuesday.But Orlov was one of the few conduits of offense on a sluggish night for most of the B's roster.

The NHL is back after a short holiday break and things in Florida are retuning to the norm.The Panthers are reverting to their old ways of basement dwelling and the Lightning are once again one of the most dangerous teams in the league.A 5-3 loss to the Rangers today has dropped Florida to 16-18-4 on the season and seventh in the Atlantic Division.

* Aleksander Barkov made a splash with five points in his return to the Panthers' lineup and was one of three players across the NHL to post a hat trick Thursday - Mark Scheifele and Kyle Okposo also did so for their respective clubs.* The Lightning, Kings, Flyers, Senators and Coyotes each earned third-period comeback wins, raising the NHL's total in 2022 to 252 - tying the League mark for most in a calendar year (regular season & playoffs combined).

With ten games in the books this season, the Florida Panthers' start has been a bit of a mixed bag.On one hand, the team is not playing overly well.Its record so far is 5-4-1, which, if the season ended today, would be on the outside of the playoff picture.Of course, it is far too early to start talking about "if the playoffs started today" scenarios, but for last season's Presidents' Trophy winners, there's no doubt that they had hoped for a better start to the year.
