North Korea conducted artillery drills near the disputed sea boundary with South Korea, prompting a response from South Korea.
North Korea is likely conducting these exercises to boost its leverage in future negotiations with the US.
The firing exercises are a violation of a 2018 inter-Korean agreement that called for a halt in live-fire exercises in front-line buffer zones. [ more ]
