I had a close exchange with Toni Di Salvo [U21 coach]. He's always happy when his players make it to the senior national team, but for his mission, it's not optimal when his players are away. So we have to find a healthy compromise. Said did well, it was his first time with us. He didn't have many training sessions, but he made a good impression. I spoke to him at the beginning of the week and we decided he would join the U21s as they have an important game in Georgia.
Even if it is true, Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund will not get caught saying too much about the coveted 19-year-old. "I don't want to talk too much about other players, but he's doing really well, he's got great pace. He's developing really well. I also think he can contribute something to the German national team. Julian will have thought this call-up through carefully," Freund told Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
This defensive approach would not take long to bite them, when a short corner in the 9th minute saw Bayern Munich midfielder Tom Bischof dribble away from his defender, see that every Malta player had backed away into the box and just let one rip. The shot completely wrong footed the goalkeeper and the ball zipped into the near post. With Bischof's first goal for the U-21s, the deadlock had been broken and the floodgates should have opened fully.
