The bicentennial celebration of Fort Hamilton not only commemorates the installation's rich history but also aims to strengthen community bonds through shared experiences.

The "Salute to Ships" tradition, part of Fleet Week New York, begins with a cannon salute at Fort Hamilton, honoring the U.S. Navy's entry into the harbor.

"This is just a great gesture. Respect to veterans is one of the cornerstones of American character. I'm very grateful that we were able to do this."

"What started as a casual conversation about the benefits of being on this installation on a permanent basis, grew into what we're celebrating today," Lallita Maharaj, director of service to the Armed Forces for the American Red Cross in Greater New York.
