Mechanical Pixel's iPhone Fold concept sidesteps these issues by keeping the phone itself rigid and adding a separate foldable screen to the back. The main iPhone body stays conventional, maintaining the familiar feel and dimensions people expect. A thin, flexible display sits raised on a platform above the rear panel, almost like it was stuck there as an afterthought. When needed, that screen unfolds outward to create a larger, squarish tablet surface.

According to a new investor note by Jeff Pu, a rather prolific source of Apple-related information, the iPhone Fold will use a combination of titanium and aluminum in its frame. That's interesting because the Pro iPhones had recently gone from stainless steel to titanium a while ago, and then switched back to aluminum, the original iPhone frame material, this year in the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 is set to be significantly thinner than its predecessor, with rumors suggesting a folded thickness of only 8.2mm.
