Durham Region police reported that the 23-year-old man was arrested while allegedly setting another residential fire, despite being on probation and barred from incendiary devices.
In 2023, a report from the Police Executive Research Forum called for police to put the brakes on car chases unless a violent crime has been committed and the suspect poses an imminent threat. The report noted a spike in fatalities and an increase in pursuits by some departments, including in Houston and New York City.

The collision happened around 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of South El Camino Real and 17th Avenue, according to the San Mateo Police Department. Cops say they responded to a 911 call of the man whom they identified as Staten Island resident Jean Victorin getting struck on South Avenue near Forest Avenue within the NYPD's 121st Precinct at 1:54 p.m. on Jan. 4.
