No chants, no floodlights, just concentration, rhythm, repetition. One movement sequence, then another. A quick check in the mirror, a swig from a drinks bottle, then back to it. Here in the gym, far away from the spotlight, Dayot Upamecano develops what is often taken for granted at the weekend: stability in his body, composure in his mind, presence in the moment. It's the kind of work that rarely makes headlines - but can decide games.
"Everyone is waiting for his commitment, his signature. His contract is ready. But Bayern Munich will not improve their offer," Plettenberg told Sky Sports News. "Upamecano can sign it, [taking him until] 2030 or 2031. There's a release clause included from the summer of 2027. He can earn 20m Euros gross per year and receive a big signing feed, together with his agent. "But Bayern is waiting for weeks, they want a decision soon."
We have multiple stories on Upamecano's contract situation. To recap, the French defender is under contract at Bayern through the end of the season and has not signed a new deal. There have been a lot of talks behind the scenes to reach an agreement, and Bayern were confident at one point that a deal would be struck. Bayern have set a deadline for Upamecano to come to a decision, but as it stands, there has been no breakthrough.
Earlier in January, Bayern were in advance talks with Upamecano. Real Madrid had dropped interest in the defender and Bayern were cautiously optimistic about closing the deal sooner rather than later. Bayern reportedly had a framework agreed for a new long term deal with Upamecano. They have also reportedly agreed to insert a release clause in his contract. The only thing left is the final green light left from Upamecano to conclude the negotiations.
After a long hesitation, Bayern have decided to grant Dayot Upamecano his wish of a €65m release clause that can be activated from summer 2027. The extension is now a matter of time. But the release clause doesn't necessarily mean that Upamecano is planning to leave after one year. It merely provides him security that he has a fixed option if he wants to take on a new challenge
