The FPPC wants to know if county government funds were used on Measure A campaign mailers, following complaints from the Silicon Valley Taxpayers Association and Libertarian Party of Santa Clara County.

Under New York law, the retail tax due on discounted products must be calculated on the price before the discount is applied, specifically so as to not subvert State and local tax collections.

"The results indicate a plethora of negative outcomes such as higher menu prices for consumers, reductions in employee working hours, widespread elimination of overtime and loss of benefits for employees," said Stephen Owen, an Economics Lecturer, University of California, Santa Cruz.

"Caltrain and BART would very likely be looking at shutting down passenger service," Deputy Director of Policy Development Melissa Jones said. "In that case, the agencies would be focused on maintenance, trying to secure our assets, keep everything safe while we regroup for the future."

Property owners who want to handle clearance themselves—and avoid racking up costs—should have responded to the county by March 10 to receive a property-specific deadline.

Standing in front of a gas pump in a video posted to social media, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan said the costs are "becoming an emergency for working families, and I think we ought to act like it." The moderate Democrat called on state lawmakers to suspend California's gas tax, which at 61 cents per gallon is the highest in the nation.

California is known for a lot of things, but affordable housing isn't often among them. The state budget's chronic gaps between income and outgo $125 billion over the last few years, according to the Legislature's fiscal advisor have left Gov. Newsom has so far shunned new taxes to close the gap, even trying to sidetrack a tax on the assets of billionaires that may appear on the November ballot.

A new estimate from the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office found that Kumar's exemption could trigger the loss of $12 billion to $20 billion annually in these key revenues across the state. Over time, these revenue losses would grow by 5 to 10% per year, the office's memo said. About half of the revenue losses would go to cities, counties and special districts. The other half would go to schools.
