For more than a century, Red Wing Shoe Company has designed and manufactured work boots in the United States with leather sourced from its own tannery. The family-owned, privately held business, which was founded in 1905 in Red Wing, Minnesota, wanted to remind its customers of that commitment to craftsmanship, so the shoemaker decided to add some distinctive texture to its advertising.

Before smartphones and digital ads dominated attention, billboards were artistic beacons on highways and streets, promoting everything from cars to roadside diners, and telling stories through captivating visuals.

"I ask you for your full support," Councilmember Noel Gallo said at Tuesday's meeting. "I was here from the very beginning when we brought Becker Boards to Oakland, and I will tell you my experience has been an extremely positive one."

Roadside billboards have become an integral part of urban landscapes, eliciting mixed emotions of nostalgia and criticism from residents and city planners alike.
