And now he has set a world record at auction. On Monday afternoon (24 November) in Paris, Artcurial sold Reni's early-17th-century, oil-on-canvas work, David and Goliath, for €12.39m (including fees), breaking the artist's previous auction record by a considerable sum. The work's pre-sale estimate was just €2m-€4m and its buyer, according to the auction house, was a private European collector.
Vincent van Gogh's (November-December 1887) sold for $62.7m at Sotheby's, New York on 20 November, a record price for one of the artist's works painted in Paris. It did considerably better than expected, since the initial pre-sale estimate (without fees) was $40m. The final result almost doubled the previous highest price at auction for a work from the artist's Paris period, the $33.2m paid for Corner of a Garden with Butterflies (May-July 1887), which sold at Christie's last year.
The football memorabilia collection comprised some 165 items including from Jennings' time at Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. The legendary keeper played some 119 international matches for Northern Ireland in an international career which lasted for more than 22 years. Jennings, 80, previously said of the auction that he felt it was the right time to sell, adding that he had also kept a few items for himself.
An autographed Caitlin Clark Logowoman rookie card sold for $660,000 at auction, nearly doubling the record for a women's card. This 1-of-1 card is notable for both its rarity and the premium associated with signed memorabilia. It was auctioned shortly after being pulled live from an online marketplace. Previously, the record was $366,000 for another Clark card. Another similar card is also up for auction and may challenge the new record.
