A new report from a government watchdog suggests the Trump administration's efforts to fire staff at the U.S. Department of Education cost taxpayers tens of millions of dollars. A New York State Comptroller audit of New York City's program to provide vouchers to help people in danger of eviction obtain housing found poor conditions, high rents and failure to qualify some seeking help. The audit by the state comptroller's office of the program that pays landlords rent subsidies for those at risk of homelessness said weak oversight and administrative lapses resulted in rising costs and placing some vulnerable families in unsafe housing.

Under Executive Order 12, according to a press statement from the city, each agency will now have five days to appoint an existing senior employee as Chief Savings Officer and grant them the relevant staff and information. This employee will have 45 days to complete a comprehensive assessment of their agency's spending, analyzing the most expensive programs to understand major drivers of cost, as well as the highest-performing programs, to try to replicate successes.
