In what was described as a Dickensian story of abuse, the woman was regularly beaten and hit with a broom handle, and her teeth knocked out. Washing-up liquid was squirted down her throat, bleach splashed on her face, and she had her head repeatedly shaved against her will.

The Church of England is investigating claims it breached the personal data of almost 200 abuse survivors. An official is reported to have failed to conceal the contact details of applicants to a compensation scheme in an email. Unredacted names, email addresses and personal data were therefore visible to other recipients, according to Channel 4 News.

The decision to withdraw Gill's works was made in response to concerns from a group of abuse survivors who felt the art was offensive and could distress visitors.
