"The researchers reported videoing 10 species scavenging on or catching bats at Python Cave in Uganda's Queen Elizabeth National Park. They saw blue monkeys dipping into the cavern to grab bats, a fight between a crowned eagle and a Nile monitor over two bats captured by the eagle, and a leopard standing almost upright to snag bats from the cave."
"It's never been seen, says study author Alexander Braczkowski, who is the scientific director of the Kyambura Lion Project in Kampala. Sometimes he would eat 30, 40 bats in a night."
Camera traps in Uganda's Queen Elizabeth National Park recorded multiple species interacting with Egyptian fruit bats, known carriers of the Marburg virus. This footage provides insight into how diseases can spread from bats to humans, either directly or through intermediate animals. Researchers documented ten species, including blue monkeys and leopards, scavenging on or hunting bats. This may be the first evidence of leopards hunting live bats, with one leopard potentially consuming dozens in a single night.
