Matt Linde and Udi Kore decided to redevelop the St. John's College site in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, after their 2017 walkthrough revealed a neglected building with potential. Having seen various uses over decades, the site has been abandoned since 1972. Linde described its dilapidated condition yet recognized its beautiful architectural features. Following negotiations, they secured a 99-year ground lease from the adjacent church to transform the space into luxury apartments, with ownership reverting to the church after the lease term unless extended.
Linde described the property as having 'amazing high ceilings' and 'amazing arch windows,' envisioning it as a beautiful transformation despite its severely neglected state.
The building had many names since its cornerstone was laid in 1869, including the College of St. John the Baptist, St. John's College, and St. John's University.
