Erin and Jon Carpenter, a couple with renovation expertise, purchased a rundown laundromat in Charleston in 2022, initially aiming for a side income. Jon was inspired by the idea after researching laundromats on YouTube and recognizing their recession-resilient nature. Despite the laundromat's poor condition at the time of purchase, they saw potential in renovating it. Their journey turned out to be more than just a financial endeavor; it blossomed into a community engagement project, marking their deeper commitment to Charleston and leading them toward additional renovations in the city.
It was definitely Jon's idea to buy a laundromat... he always heard that they were a good investment. So we were thinking - why not try a laundromat?
It was very, very cheap... it was in absolutely horrible condition, and I was horrified. I was like, 'Oh, wow, this is crazy. This is going to be a funny story to talk about later.'
We thought we'd love to be in the local business community... it would be a fun pet project to renovate.
We had no idea what we were doing. We were kind of just learning as we went.
