Waterloo station is undergoing a roof upgrade that includes repairing and replacing its glass roof, with 10 out of 25 bays completed. Work is also in progress on six porte cochere roofs. The project will replace approximately 10,000 glazing panes and is slated for completion in early 2027. Safety measures include protective scaffold decking and nightly operations. The renovation aims to deliver a brighter environment and enhance acoustics for announcements, visibly marking the progress for passengers at different sections of the station.
Once completed, London Waterloo will be cleaner and brighter for passengers while acoustics will make things easier for passengers to hear station announcements.
Most of the significant works had to take place overnight during the brief period the station is closed in the early hours of the morning.
In total, the project is expected to replace around 10,000 glazing panes and is scheduled for completion in early 2027.
The upgrade work has been a complex project and involved setting up a protective scaffold decking in the frame of the station under the glass bays.
