"When it comes to home decorating, interior designer Vern Yip has some old-school advice: Get offline and find design inspiration in the real world. "What you're seeing on your screen might be an OK starting point, but nothing beats physical samples," says Yip, like a carpet swatch, a paint chip or a piece of wallpaper. He shares this philosophy and more in his book, Color Pattern Texture: The Foundation to Make Your Home Your Own, published in September."
"There are many online decorating trends that "might be passable in a photograph or social media post," but not so much in real life, says Yip. That includes temporary solutions like peel-and-stick wall panels, tiling or flooring. They're "never going to feel like wood, marble, porcelain or whatever would have been your first choice," Yip says. So "find a solution that will get you over the hump until you can do it the way you want," he says."
Get design inspiration offline and use physical samples such as carpet swatches, paint chips, and wallpaper to make accurate color and texture decisions. Physical samples reveal true material qualities and help create rooms that both look and feel good. Avoid relying on social media or AI for final choices because online hacks and peel-and-stick solutions often appear acceptable in photos but lack authentic texture and durability. Use temporary fixes like a quality rug until permanent flooring is affordable. Hunt secondhand stores and yard sales for more durable, better-crafted furniture rather than buying cheaply made mass-market pieces online.
