Tatiana de Nicolay, a designer and illustrator, transformed a neglected apartment in Paris's 16th arrondissement into a vibrant living space. The couple fell in love with the apartment's stunning dining room wall panels after visiting 35 other flats. The renovation took eight months and involved a total overhaul of the kitchen and two bathrooms, along with an open-concept living area using a trellis-inspired room divider. Tatiana sought to restore the apartment's charm while ensuring functionality, integrating plenty of storage throughout the space.
Tatiana and her husband fell in love with their apartment due to the stunning colorful wooden wall panels in the dining room. They visited 35 flats before choosing this one, which hadn’t been renovated for over 50 years. "No one had occupied the flat for 10 years," Tatiana notes, illustrating both the charm and neglect of the space.
Prior to their move-in, the apartment was described by Tatiana as old-fashioned, with dated '70s-era bathrooms. She indicated that it felt "ugly and needed refurbishment" to inject life and character back into it.
The renovation of the apartment took eight months, during which Tatiana referred to the process as "very long" and at times feeling like it was "never going to end." The work included a complete kitchen renovation and the re-imagining of existing spaces.
Improvements included combining two small storage spaces into a new bathroom, creating an open living area with a custom trellis-inspired room divider, and adding entryway cabinets for storage. Tatiana's vision was to provide functionality while maintaining charm.
