The Landmarks Preservation Commission has approved a significant project for The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which includes a new contemporary wing named the Oscar L. Tang and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Wing. Slated to replace the existing Lila Acheson Wallace Wing, the new facility aims to enhance the museum's collection of 20th and 21st-century art. Additionally, plans for landscape changes in Central Park adjacent to the museum were approved but will involve the removal of 13 mature trees. Construction is expected to begin in summer 2026, with completion by 2030, following community support and necessary permits.
This is a project that has been a long time in the making and directly supports our mission, as well as aims to enhance and improve the relationship of the park and the museum.
We request a clear and detailed restatement of the reasons necessitating this removal, as articulated by the Conservancy.
