Landscape designer Paul Harness developed a row-house backyard from a blank slate, emphasizing a formal structure that allows for seasonal experimentation. With features like a metal dining pergola and bluestone patio, the garden serves as an outdoor great room suitable for gatherings. Seasonal plantings can be varied, ensuring distinct aesthetics each year. Notably, the design has evolved over five years, swapping out fruit trees for birches and refreshing window boxes seasonally, creating a dynamic yet structured outdoor space.
"It was really a blank slate," said Harness, a 20-year employee of Plant Specialists, adding that the garden has been an evolution featuring seasonal experimentation and permanent structures.
"The garden was conceived as an outdoor great room, built to allow large groups of people to mingle, drinks in hand," said Harness, reflecting on its design purpose.
