The Design Secrets Behind Zooey Deschanel and Jonathan Scott's Home
""Teaming up with Jonathan made my job so much easier," says AD100 designer Young Huh, who partnered with Property Brother Jonathan Scott on the New York City duplex he shares with partner Zooey Deschanel and their two young children. "He has a tremendous understanding of architecture, and he obviously knows construction, which meant we could jump straight to the details.""
""These are some of the most elaborate custom moldings I've ever designed," she says. "Everything was hand installed, from the corbels to those little florets, which arrived individually and had to be applied piece by piece." Nearly 12 inches in height, the moldings are sized at a larger scale than typical crown moldings-indeed, any smaller and they would have appeared puny against the 14-foot ceilings."
Young Huh and Jonathan Scott converted a stripped white-box Manhattan duplex into a lush, old-world–inspired family home with modern underpinnings. Elaborate, hand-installed plaster crown moldings nearly 12 inches high were fabricated by Hyde Park Mouldings to suit 14-foot ceilings. Custom millwork includes double bunk beds with queen lower and full upper mattresses, designed for hosting guests. Scott's architectural and construction knowledge expedited detailed decision-making. Plaster work demanded extensive time compared with wood, but delivered incomparable detail. Artisans such as Legacy Millwork executed custom carpentry and bunk units tailored to family needs.
