Tadao Ando's only building in the Southern Hemisphere gets a five-year lifeline
Briefly

The MPavilion, designed by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando, originally intended for a one-year stay in Queen Victoria Gardens, has now received a five-year extension until 2030. This decision, made during a city council vote, reflects the strong community and architectural support, including endorsements from notable figures like Ando himself. The pavilion, recognized as the only Ando structure in the Southern Hemisphere, aims to provide a transcendent experience similar to that of the Sydney Opera House, despite financial concerns from the city's officials.
Ando credited Australia's iconic buildings for leaving an "enduring impression" on him as a young man and a wish to return the favour.
When I set out to design MPavilion I hoped to provide an experience of a lifetime akin to my own experience at Sydney Opera House.
The arguments for an extension were further bolstered by letters of support from prominent figures, emphasizing the pavilion's significance.
Councillor Philip Le Liu acknowledged the foundation was "very cheeky" in its use of concrete for a temporary pavilion.
