Surrealist Design Enhances the Picassos in this Paris Apartment
"“They really live with their art-and didn't want their apartment to feel like a museum,” explains Bousquet."
"Over the course of two and a half years, Bousquet re-designed the entire layout of the 3,000-square-foot space, which encompassed the top two floors of the apartment building. He connected the floors and lowered the ceiling height in order to add a terrace reminiscent of cosmetics magnate Helena Rubinstein 's rooftop gardens. This summer, the space will come to life with a myriad of sculptures, a dining area, and an outdoor fireplace."
"Hazelnut travertine is found throughout the apartment-even on the skirting boards-as is Taj Mahal marble and glowing Iranian onyx. Stone finishes rub shoulders with more delicate items: The carved stone fireplace in the living room, for example, sits next to a pair of blown crystal lamps found in Milan."
"Bousquet acquired many unique objects from the Galerie Jacques Lacoste, including bronze wall lights with a natural patina from their previous life illuminating a swimming pool."
A 3,000-square-foot apartment was reworked over two and a half years, spanning the top two floors and connecting them while lowering ceiling height to create a terrace inspired by Helena Rubinstein’s rooftop gardens. Surrealist design motifs appear throughout, with artworks by Cocteau, Picasso, and Sterling Ruby displayed alongside Viola’s video Bodies of Light near a ribbon-like staircase. The design uses layered materials, including hazelnut travertine, Taj Mahal marble, and glowing Iranian onyx, paired with delicate elements such as blown crystal lamps. Unique objects were sourced from Galerie Jacques Lacoste, including bronze wall lights with natural patina that once illuminated a swimming pool. This summer, sculptures, a dining area, and an outdoor fireplace will complete the space.
