"Or at least that's what's supposed to happen, as the end result is not really what was suggested in the early concept image sent to other publications. The impression would be of a simmering, partially translucent screen that would be lit from behind. To show off the church through a veil. In fact, it's a painted fabric hung over scaffolding and lit from the outside by a handful of spotlights at the bottom."
"According to the blurb, the artwork "draws attention to the church's exposure to air pollution, emphasising the two-coloured columns resulting from its decades-long exposure to pollution as a busy traffic gyratory before the pedestrianisation of Strand Aldwych in 2022. " Allegedly. Candidly, if you didn't know it was an art installation, you'd probably assume it was just a rather dingy fabric covering for the scaffolding to let the restorers work safely behind it."
St Mary le Strand church has been partially covered with a shimmering screen that serves both as functional cladding and as an artwork. Early concept imagery suggested a semi-translucent, backlit veil intended to showcase the church, but the installed piece is a painted fabric hung over scaffolding and lit from outside spotlights. The artwork draws attention to the church's exposure to air pollution, emphasising two-coloured columns caused by decades of traffic pollution before Strand Aldwych was pedestrianised in 2022. The covering looks less impressive in daylight and can be mistaken for standard restoration sheeting. The installation, Decades by Louise Giovanelli, is scheduled to remain until 19th November, and the church's own website contains no mention, with only a local business development press release noted.
