The Barbican Centre in London is set for a significant 'renewal' project commencing in 2027 and concluding in 2030, just ahead of its 50th anniversary. This major transformation will enhance accessibility with a revamped conservatory, rejuvenate the lakeside area, and introduce more flexible, inclusive foyers. Supported by 90% of public respondents, the project has a budget of approximately £240 million, predominantly funded by the City of London Corporation. The designs reflect both the Centre's heritage and a commitment to sustainability and inclusivity.
The Barbican Centre's ruggedness is its charm, and part of the reason that well over a million people visit the art centre every year.
The total cost of the first phase of works has been costed at around £240 million, 80 percent of which has been committed by the City of London Corporation.
We've been incredibly encouraged by the public's enthusiasm for our plans. These new images reflect a vision for the Barbican Centre that stays true to our unique heritage and bold character.
Between now and 2030, the brutalist beauty will be revamped with a more accessible conservatory, a revived lakeside area... and more flexible-use, inclusive foyers.
