Small Spaces Don't Have To Be This Color in Order To Feel Bigger, Nate Berkus Says
Briefly

Renowned designer Nate Berkus challenges the myth that small spaces must be painted light colors to feel livable. He advocates for embracing darker hues and even painting ceilings in colors like pale pink or gray. This can enhance warmth and intimacy. Berkus also refutes the notion that furniture must match or that sofas should align with the longest wall. He emphasizes that large rugs are essential for creating expansiveness in a room. A creative approach can produce beautiful spaces without a large budget.
I don't think that's true at all. I think you can embrace a small space. Paint it dark or use a dark wallpaper. You can even paint the ceiling in a small space. Something about that is really charming and really intimate.
Some of my favorite historic interiors actually have painted ceilings. And whenever I notice that - a pale pink ceiling, a pale gray ceiling, a pale green ceiling - it makes me really happy.
Sofas can float, you can put a console behind, you can put a long bench behind the sofa.
Rugs should be large to make a space feel expansive.
