MVRDV and Zecc Architecten will convert a decommissioned church in Heerlen into a public swimming pool named Holy Water. This innovative project includes an adjustable floor to create a flexible space for swimming and various community events. Historical elements will be repurposed; pews will become spectator seating, and the pulpit will serve as a lifeguard chair. The renovation pays homage to the church's history with a new mosaic floor while preserving its stained-glass windows, ensuring a vibrant and functional community venue despite the significant interior alterations.
"An adjustable swimming pool floor brings flexibility to the space that was once the church's nave, allowing it to host a variety of activities in addition to swimming."
"The floor also makes it possible to fill the entire space with a thin layer of water, creating an impressive reflection of the church that gives visitors the feeling that they can walk on water."
