Liangmao Village Renovation / NODE Achitecture & Urbanism
Briefly

The Urban Village Projects in Longgang, Shenzhen, initiated in 2021, focus on revitalizing urban villages while confronting the effects of rapid urbanization. Liangmao Village, a key project site, exemplifies how urban expansion has erased distinct local characteristics, leading to a uniform urban landscape across cities. Originally an ancient agrarian community, Liangmao has undergone significant transformation to accommodate modern housing needs. The design team led by NODE Architecture aims to preserve local identity while implementing renovation strategies that respect the historical essence of these urban villages, addressing the overarching challenge of uniformity in contemporary urban design.
The rapid urbanization has homogenized cities in China, erasing unique local identities and historical spaces, leading to a phenomenon often described as 'a thousand villages with one face.'
Liangmao Village, a small agrarian settlement redefined by urban pressures, symbolizes the challenges of urban expansion, losing its diverse character to uniform planning practices.
