LA residents start to rebuild months after wildfires destroy Pacific Palisades
Briefly

Nearly four months post-wildfires, residents of Los Angeles are beginning to rebuild amidst significant challenges. Despite several homeowners seeking permits to reconstruct their homes, many face barriers due to safety concerns about toxins, financial strain, and a slow permitting process. Notably, 17,000 structures were lost in the fires, with many land parcels currently for sale. Although the city's permitting pace post-disaster is relatively swift, it still poses difficulties for affected families and communities who must navigate a complex restoration landscape.
In most cases, it will take years for them to rebuild. LA issued its first building permit nearly two months after the fires started, showing the length of the recovery process.
"Putting this in context of other disasters, the speed is actually probably faster than expected," said researcher Sara McTarnaghan regarding reconstruction timelines.
