Kailua House / Mork-Ulnes Architects

The 2024 Kailua House is located down a short path from Kailua beach on Oahu’s Windward shore. The site provides peekaboo views of the Pacific Ocean and the Mokulua Islands off Lanikai. Despite the nearby beach, the surrounding neighborhood is dense. The project responds by directing attention inward toward a lush jungle landscape. The design celebrates island energy of Hawaii through inward-focused spatial organization and landscape connection. The house spans 476 m² and is associated with a multi-disciplinary team including architecture, landscape, structural engineering, and construction support. Materials and products include finishes and fixtures from multiple listed manufacturers.

Despite its proximity to the beach, the surrounding neighborhood is fairly dense, which created a desire to focus the house inward to the lush jungle landscape and celebrate the island energy of Hawaii."
