Taoiseach Mr. Martin defended the Government's exempted development initiative amid criticisms, emphasizing the need for solutions in the housing crisis. He stated that Ireland must increase housing delivery from 30,000 to 50,000 units yearly to meet population growth. While recognizing that exempted developments like log cabins contribute to housing, he clarified that significant investment, both public and private, is essential for substantial progress. Additionally, he highlighted the necessity of around €20 billion in investment for targeted housing goals, urging local authorities and agencies to adopt a solution-focused approach.
Mr Martin hit out at criticisms of the Government's exempted development initiative, which was dismissed by some Opposition groups as merely offering "a bed in a shed."
Housing is the number one issue facing the country - on that there is no doubt. I have said that repeatedly.
The issue I am interested in is the 'how' to get from 30,000 houses to 50,000 (per year). That is what politicians should focus on.
Because people are estimating that we will need about €20bn of an investment to get to 50,000 houses on an annual ongoing basis.
