Craig Hartzman and Jim John's beach cottage on the Big Island epitomizes their lifestyle and connection to Hawaii. The 3,000-square-foot home serves as a sanctuary for the couple, who cherish their deep-rooted traditions in the region. Collaborating closely with Suzie and David Lucas of Lucas Interior, they created a home that embraces fresh air, comfort, and functional spaces, particularly in the kitchen and shower design. Hartzman's statement reflects their satisfaction with the home as perfect and indicative of their collective desires and habits.
The location plays a starring role in the couple's everlasting connection. They met serendipitously in Honolulu in 1986, at Halekulani Hotel, and have been together ever since. Hawaii was a continuous thread from both their sets of parents that braided into their own family's traditions.
We're conscious about making spaces that accommodate our lifestyle, like the big open shower with access to the outdoors, and the kitchen tailored to our habits.
This is the first house we've ever done that we've said, 'No, it's just right.' It has become this sanctuary for us.
The design emphasizes comfort and familiarity, featuring prolific non-precious spots for napping and all sorts of reading experiences throughout the home.
